(Greenwood, SC, Jan. 24, 2013) – Self Medical Center • Laurens, the Lakelands’ first patient-centered designed healthcare facility, officially opens January 28. The 28,000-square-foot medical center is located at 22580 Highway 76 East in Laurens and is the new home for physician practices Family Healthcare • Clinton and Internal Medicine • Laurens.

Designed to enhance the patients’ experience, Self Medical Center • Laurens represents an evolution from the traditional healthcare visit. Patients who visit their physician are quickly ushered back to a private exam room, where they will check-in, interact with their physician and other caregivers, have procedures such as lab work done and finalize their visit by checking out and scheduling any follow-up appointments. All clinical staff will enter the patient’s room from a separate hallway, which is anchored by a care station in the middle to enhance communication.

“Patient-centered care represents a departure from the normal way of practicing medicine in an office setting,” said Dr. Stanley Walsh Jr. of Family Healthcare • Clinton. “Having all procedures take place in the exam room will streamline the patient visit and result in shorter wait times.”

Physician Practices

Family Healthcare Clinton includes family practice doctors Dr. James Belcher; Dr. Stanley Walsh, Jr.; Dr. Peter Partee; and Dr. Louis Stephens, Jr. and nurse practitioners Jacquelyn Waldron and Ruth Shealy. The practice will move from 23013 Highway 76 in Clinton to Self Medical Center • Laurens. The practice is accepting new patients and can be reached at (864) 833-5986.

Internal Medicine Laurens is adding a new internist to its practice, Alfred D. Moore, M.D., and he and Kurt Budelmann, M.D., and Leon Buffaloe, Jr., M.D., will relocate their practice from 600 Plaza Circle to the new facility. Nurse practitioner Laura Odom also will see patients at Internal Medicine • Laurens. Internal Medicine • Laurens can be reached at (864) 833-0055 and is accepting new patients.
Both Family Healthcare • Clinton and Internal Medicine • Laurens are members of Self Medical Group, Self Regional Healthcare’s physician network.

Facility Design
The facility, designed by Furman Architects in Greenwood, features a “patient-centric design,” said Courtney Furman, president of the architecture firm. “This is the only physician practice in the Lakelands area which featuring this type of design, which is created with the patient’s comfort in mind. Another advantage with this concept is that we eliminate time in the waiting area and create a soothing and friendly environment that makes the visit as pleasant as possible.”
Patients will enter their room through one hallway and all the physicians, nurses and other staff taking care of the individual enter through an interior hallway.

“Patients won’t have to encounter the hustle and bustle of a regular medical practice where they may have to step through a nurse’s station or go to multiple places for lab work or other procedures,” Dr. Walsh said. “Once the patient is escorted to an exam room, everyone who needs to see or talk with the patient will come there.”
In addition to space for the physician practices, the facility also includes a community room, which will be utilized for community health education and outreach classes and presentations.
