(Greenwood, S.C., November 2, 2016) On September 21, 2016 Michael Kilburn, M.D., Board-certified/Fellowship-trained Neurosurgeon at the South Carolina Spine Center, performed a 2 level cervical disc replacement using the BRYAN™ Artificial Disc device, a first in upstate South Carolina.

BRYAN™ Artificial Disc

Cervical disc replacements are performed to relieve chronic pain from nerve pressure in the neck. A problematic disc is removed from the patient’s spinal column and an artificial disc is then put in its place. During a 2 level procedure, two offending discs are replaced using synthetic cervical discs, in this case the BRYAN™ device, manufactured by Medtronic.

“I’m pleased with how the procedure went and I feel confident the patient will see positive results and changes in their quality of life,” said Dr. Kilburn. “Self Regional continues to progress in the use of the latest, cutting-edge technology and this particular case proves that.”

Until recently, in patients under 50 years old, the alternative to using artificial discs was to undergo a spinal fusion, a complex surgery with a longer recovery period. The use of the BRYAN™ artificial disc device will extend the possibilities for those seeking relief from neck pain in the Lakelands and surrounding areas.
