(Greenwood, S.C., October 30, 2017) On October 5, 2017, Michael Kilburn, M.D. and Sumeer Lal, M.D., Board-certified/Fellowship-trained Neurosurgeons at Advanced Spine and Neurosurgical Associates, performed a hemorrhage evacuation using The Apollo™ system, a low profile irrigation-aspiration system used for the evacuation of intracranial hemorrhages. The physicians were the first in upstate South Carolina to use the technology.

The Apollo™ system is an innovative new surgical tool that allows for minimally invasive removal of deeply seated tissue and fluids in the brain during one simple operation. With combined use of an endoscope and image guidance, the Apollo System allows decompression and removal of otherwise inoperable blood clots rooted in the brain.

“We are very happy with the results of the procedure,” said Dr. Lal. “Self Regional Healthcare and Advanced Spine and Neurosurgical Associates continue to stay at the forefront of accessing and utilizing the newest technology available for our patients.”

Dr. Kilburn added, “Procedures like this were never imaginable until recently, and being present to witness the results first hand is incredible. We’re eager to see how many patients are impacted by this service.”

Prior to the release of The Apollo™ system, patients experiencing intracranial hemorrhages faced dire and often times, fatal, circumstances. With the new procedure offered at Advanced Spine and Neurosurgical Associates, Lakelands residents now have access to cutting-edge medical solutions for health issues.
