(Greenwood, S.C., October 25, 2018)- Self Regional Healthcare Board of Trustees has welcomed a new board chair and three new members. Michael Butler, Pastor, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and retired Assistant Chief of Greenwood Police Department; Gregory Mappin, M.D., MBA, FACS, Medical Director and Associate Professor of Physician Assistant Studies, Presbyterian College; and Joseph R. Millender, retired, Vice President and General Manager of the Americas Division, Capsugel, were appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to serve six-year terms on the board. Linda McDonald, retired, International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation has served on the Self Regional Board since 2014, and has been elected Chairwoman of the Self Regional Healthcare Board of Trustees.

Individuals who serve on the Self Regional Healthcare Board of Trustees are entrusted with selecting optimal strategies for the direction of the organization, and for the future of healthcare in the region.

Michael Butler

Michael is the pastor at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and is retired from service as Assistant Chief with the Greenwood Police Department. He is a Greenwood native of 64 years, and currently serves on the Greenwood Housing Authority Board, Greenwood Pastor and Minister Fellowship, the McCormick Ministrial Alliance and the Simmon Ridge Samaritan Baptist Association.

Mr. Butler and his wife, Lynda, reside in Greenwood, SC and together they have three children; Tanieka, Michael and Schanen. In his spare time Michael enjoys reading, fishing and traveling.

 

 Gregory Mappin, M.D., MBA, FACS

Dr. Gregory Mappin has worked and lived in Greenwood for 25 years and was recently appointed Medical Director and Associate Professor of Physician Assistant Studies at Presbyterian College. He previously served as the Chief Medical Officer at Self Regional Healthcare.

Dr. Mappin obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees from Duke University and went on to complete a general surgery residency at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1985 to 1991, and received his fellowship training in general thoracic surgery at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. He moved to Greenwood in 1991 where he entered private practice in general and thoracic surgery. During this time, he was a managing partner of multi-specialty surgical practice, Medical Staff President and later, as board member of Self Regional Healthcare (2005-2006). In 2005, he completed an MBA program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. While continuing to practice thoracic surgery, he became the Vice President of Medical Affairs for Self Regional Healthcare and continued a practice limited to thoracic surgery where his responsibilities included medical staff relations, supervision of the Medical Staff Services office, oversight of professional liability and serving as chair of the Self Regional review board.

He is a past member of the Greenwood Rotary Club and recently completed terms as a board member of Hospice Care of the Piedmont, and MyHealthFirst, a clinically integrated healthcare network serving the upstate of South Carolina.

Dr. Mappin resides in Greenwood, SC with his wife Vicki. He has three children, daughter Georgia, and sons John and Joseph. In his spare time, Dr. Mappin enjoys gardening and beekeeping.

 Joseph R. Millender is a retired Vice President and General Manager of the Americas Division of Capsugel in Greenwood, SC. Mr. Millender has lived in Greenwood for 40 years.

Currently, Joseph serves on the Hospice Care of the Piedmont board (former Board Chair), Greenwood Promise Chair, District 3 representative of the Jobs Economic Development Authority, member of the board for the Greater Greenwood Clemson Club, member of the Wesley Commons Board and a member of the Emerald City Rotary.

Mr. Millender values spending time with his wife, Brenda, three daughters; Jessica, Meredith and Whitney, and his five grandchildren. In his spare time Mr. Millender enjoys golf, reading and volunteering.
