Self Regional coordinates with SCDHEC,  CDC, SC Hospital Association and local officials on COVID-19 preparedness

Like hospitals all around the country, Self Regional Healthcare is taking measures to prepare for the possible appearance of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in our service area.  Our Emergency Management and Infection Control teams are fully engaged: receiving daily reports and updates from the CDC, reviewing protocols and conducting exercises.  Our team has begun coordinating with SCDHEC,  SCHA, the CDC as well as local officials.  The Self Regional Medical Center is equipped to manage infectious disease patients.  We have protective equipment for our patients and our team members.  Our team will continue to receive up to date information as it is released by the CDC.  We have implemented the CDC recommended screening tool that is already being used at all of our registration areas, and are prepared to respond to if there is a potential high risk patient.

We hope that we will not see the coronavirus in our community, if we do Self Regional Medical Center is prepared and is following all CDC recommendations for health care facilities.

Prevent and Prepare

The best prevention against COVID-19 is practicing basic hand hygiene. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds after touching objects and surfaces, and immediately after interacting or shaking hands with others. If soap and water is not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Make sure the hand sanitizer you choose contains at least 60 percent alcohol. And, remember to avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Stay six feet away from anyone who is showing flu- or cold-like symptoms. Most importantly, if you feel sick stay home. Just as if you had the flu or other infection, by isolating yourself you help protect your family, friends and coworkers.

If you think you might have COVID-19

It’s important that you call ahead before arriving at your physician’s office, ED or other healthcare facility if:

  • you develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness, such as cough or difficulty breathing, and
  • have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19 or if you live in or have recently traveled to an area with ongoing spread.

Call ahead to tell your physician about your recent travel or contact. Your provider will work with your state’s public health department and CDC to determine if you need to be tested for COVID-19.

About Testing

At this point in time, testing for COVID-19 can only be performed on individuals who meet very specific criteria defined by the CDC.  Patients who do not have symptoms should not come to any Self Regional Healthcare facility expecting to be tested for COVID-19, as CDC guidelines restrict testing to who meet the CDC criteria.
