What to Expect at a Residency Clinic

A residency clinic is a medical facility where resident physicians see patients and provide care under the direction of board-certified Family Medicine physicians.

Residents are physicians who are receiving additional training after obtaining their doctor of medicine degree. They have completed medical school and are gaining an additional three years of training in the specialty of family medicine.

As a team, our resident physicians will discuss your individualized care with board-certified physicians. They’ll be a part of your team of providers and take the time to share the latest advances in medical training. Because of their education and experience, residents can make some decisions regarding patient care and perform minor procedures without direct supervision.

In the Family Medicine Residency Program of Self Regional Healthcare, our licensed resident physicians, board-certified faculty physicians and the entire team of providers are here to provide comprehensive care and are fully engaged in your healthcare needs, as they help create the best experience for you and your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of care will I receive by a resident physician?

Since our resident physicians work closely with attending physicians, patients are receiving care from a team of providers. Resident physicians spend time with their patients, collecting medical history and may perform a physical exam. The resident will collaborate with the attending physician, confirming the diagnosis and discussing the best course of action. The attending physician will meet with the patient to collect further information and to answer any additional questions.

Will I be able to address questions and concerns that I may have with resident physicians?

Resident physicians are very open to answering any questions or concerns that you may have. Our providers are continuously reading, researching and exploring the most recent and accurate information to be able to provide you with the best care. If they need any additional guidance, our attending physicians are available, allowing a team of doctors to have a part in your care.

Why will I not see the same physician at every visit?

While resident physicians are spending three years of medical training in the family medicine clinic, they are also broadening their knowledge in other various specialties like sports medicine, obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics. Residents will also spend time in the hospital setting, as they learn to take care of patients. If your resident physician is away from the clinic, you may see one of their counterparts or an attending physician. That provider will stay in communication with your physician, giving them updates on your care.

What type of education and training do my providers have?

All of our physicians, both resident and attending, have completed medical school and hold either a degree of Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO). Attending physicians are American board-certified and have already completed residency training, whereas resident physicians are currently completing their training.
