Fitness for Healing and Health

At Self Regional Healthcare, we are here for you when you need us most. Staying active during and after cancer treatment is one of the most powerful ways to support your recovery, strength, and overall well-being.

Whether you are currently undergoing treatment, healing from surgery, or in remission, our Exercise Oncology Program is designed to help you feel stronger, more energized, and more in control of your health.

Why Exercise Matters During Cancer Treatment

Research continues to show that safe, structured physical activity can significantly improve quality of life for cancer patients. A 2018 review published in Psycho Oncology found that exercise can meaningfully reduce symptoms of depression in cancer patients.

Regular movement can help:

• Strengthen the immune system
• Reduce fatigue and increase energy
• Improve mood and decrease stress and anxiety
• Support healthy weight management
• Increase strength, flexibility, and mobility
• Promote better sleep
• Improve mental clarity and focus
• Encourage treatment adherence
• Lower the risk of recurrence and chronic illness
• Build confidence and a sense of community

Exercise is not just about fitness. It is about healing.

What to Expect in Our Program

Our team will guide you through exercises that focus on aerobic conditioning, strength training, balance, and stretching. Each program is tailored to your diagnosis, treatment stage, and functional goals.

Aerobic Training

Low impact options such as walking, NuStep, seated elliptical, and recumbent bicycle are commonly used.

When appropriate and based on ability, we may also incorporate higher intensity movements such as slam balls, jump rope, or rowing.

Strength Training

Patients work through upper and lower body strengthening using multi use weight machines, dumbbells, and resistance bands.

Exercises may include bicep curls, tricep extensions, squats, and lower extremity strengthening to restore movement and function.

All movements are adapted with special attention to surgical sites, ports, and individual limitations.

Balance Training

Using our in-center barre and balance equipment, patients perform exercises such as foot over foot movement, single leg stabilization, and BOSU work to improve coordination and reduce fall risk.

Stretching and Mobility

Stretching is tailored to each patient’s cancer type and recovery needs, including lymphedema reduction techniques when appropriate.

For example, breast cancer patients may focus on diaphragmatic breathing, posture, and restoring range of motion through the arms and shoulders.

Functional Training

We also incorporate goal specific exercises that help patients safely return to daily life and work activities.

If a patient needs to return to a physically demanding job, such as operating machinery or climbing into equipment, exercises are designed to rebuild those specific movement patterns safely.
